Veterans and Active Duty military are able to take advantage of one free exam pass once per year, each year it is offered. The year resets on Veteran’s Day. We welcome repeat candidates and hope to find ways to continue to support your transition from warrior to cyber warrior. To register for an exam, select a CCE® credential from our Available Certifications. Select ‘Apply for Certification’ to get started. Upload your proof of military service and resume with relevant experience.

What qualifies as proof of military service (Vets versus active duty)?

Please ensure to encrypt, BLACK OUT, or otherwise protect any sensitive information.

Proof of service may include:

  • Active Duty: Leave and Earnings Statement (LES)
  • Veterans: Service Verification through your eBenefits account (preferred, see steps below); Veteran Identification Card (VIC); or Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty DD 214.

The Department of Veterans Affairs makes validating military service easy. Just follow these steps:

  1. Login to eBenefits
  2. Click on the eBenefits logo (top left)
  3. Click on VA Letters link
  4. Click on Service Verification link
  5. Print to .pdf
Once registered how long do I have access?

Registration must occur within one (1) year of purchase. Once registered, access to the exam expires in sixty (60) days. Once the exam has started, you must complete the exam within a single session in the allotted timeframe.

How many attempts do I have at passing the exam?

Each Exam Pass or Discounted Retake provides only a single attempt. If the Exam Reload Package is purchased, you receive the initial Exam Pass, plus one additional Retake, if necessary.

Retakes are only available after you have failed to pass the initial exam. Retakes are limited to the same exam associated with the initial CE credential and must be taken by the same individual who took the initial exam.

Is the exam timed? How long is the exam?

Each exam is timed (varies from 90-150 minutes), the specific time limit is provided upon registration and can be requested in advance by emailing [email protected].

Is this an open-book exam?

This is not an open-book exam. Study notes, online materials, or other resources, including providing or accepting assistance is not appropriate and would violate exam policy. Additional Exam Policies

What is the exam format?

Candidates are required to apply cyber concepts and experience to a series of exam items, including multiple choice, T/F, and scenario-based questions. Exams are static; presenting the candidate with a fixed set of items in a variety of difficulty levels.

Many exams contain 5-15 field-test items which are not counted as part of a candidate’s score. Field testing allows us to gather data on a question’s effectiveness before it is included on future exams as a scored item. Answers to field-test items do not count toward any part of an exam score and are only used for item development purposes. Field test items are randomly mixed with scored exam items so that test takers will not be able to distinguish them from scored items.

Which certification is best for me?

Our exams offer a variety of concentrated areas. It is best to target the one that is of most value to you and that will best highlight your experience and knowledge.

If you successfully pass any exam, than you would qualify for the Certified Expert ASSOCIATE-level. If you want to earn the EXPERT-level, you will need to ensure that you can show proof of the requisite experience (each certification is different, please review the certifications on our website for requisite experience).

What does vendor-neutral mean?

Vendor-neutral certifications attest to the candidate’s knowledge of the subject. Vendor-neutral certifications validate the candidate’s unbiased knowledge of technology principles.

The School of Cyber Security (SCS) Cyber Certified Experts (CCE) Program offers certifications designed to reflect knowledge of cyber processes and terminology. Our vendor-neutral exams are specifically aligned with industry-recognized standards, and offer a variety of concentrated areas. A candidate is assessed by:

  1. Reviewing Experience: A minimum number of years in cyber and the associated skill set is required for Expert level certification.
  2. Testing Competence: The candidate is required to apply cyber concepts and experience to a series of exam questions.
  3. Ongoing Development: Maintenance of a certification requires the accumulation of ongoing professional development credits (PDCs).
How are the exams proctored?

ProctorU is a an online exam proctoring service. Through ProctorU you may take CCE exams from the comfort of your own home. Prior to the exam an online exam proctor will validate that your environment is clear of impermissible material. What are the certification cycle requirements?

Once you earn a Certified Expert (CE) credential, you are certified for a period of three years. Every CE credential requires you to pay a $75 annual fee and report sixty (60) Professional Development Credits (PDCs) during the three-year certification cycle to be eligible for renewal.

Exceptions: Those that were certified prior to 2017 received a waiver of annual requirements through the 2017 renewal. At the 2017 renewal, all Certification Holders are automatically enrolled in the updated program and will need to ensure compliance to all cycle requirements.

Participants of the Veterans Day offer will receive a partial waiver of requirements. This will be represented by a subtraction of the first annual fee ($75) from the total due in the initial three-year cycle.

When do I need to pay my annual fees?

Annual fees may be paid yearly or you may pay the entire three-year cycle all at once. The due date of each annual fee is based on your cycle start date. The annual fees may be submitted anytime, however must be current prior to submitting PDCs.

Why must I renew my certification?

All Lunarline CCE Program certifications have been updated to the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework (aka the NICE Framework) NIST Special Publication 800-181 and are currently approved by the NICCS Program; NICCS is managed by the Cybersecurity Education and Awareness Branch (CE&A) within DHS and partnered with National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), National Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE), and the National Cybersecurity Workforce Framework. We are also moving towards the ANSI / DoD 8570.01 requirements. This requires an update to the certification requirements to include continuing education to stay relevant and meet the changing specialized training requirements. Note that certification holders must pay an annual fee as part of their successful cycle completion.

What are eligible Professional Development Credits (PDCs)?

Certificate Holders can earn PDCs through a variety of opportunities. The goal of PDCs is to ensure that your certified competencies stay relevant and up-to-date. PDC activities must relate to topics that are substantially consistent (at least 50%) with the Concentration Area for your credential. There are many opportunities to earn PDCs. Examples include completing a higher academic course, attending educational/training courses and seminars, attending conferences, attending vendor presentations, preparing for presentation/lecture/training, publishing a security article or book, completing self-study, etc.

Do I need to take the test after being certified?

Certification Holders will not need to retake the exam and can maintain their credential by paying a $75 annual fee and reporting sixty (60) Professional Development Credits (PDCs) during the three-year certification cycle to be eligible for renewal.
